When you think of one of the most pressing issues in the world, what do you think of? Climate change? Air pollution? Access to clean water? A global pandemic? Health in developing nations? Education? Inequality? Conflict?
Whatever it may be, I know you’re unlikely to think of fashion as a pressing problem currently in the world.
Fast fashion is putting the future of our planet at risk by leaving a huge environmental footprint; ranging from the pesticides used in growing cotton to leached chemicals from toxic dyes, and the landfill impact of clothes that quickly wear out. Don’t forget the energy required to produce each article of clothing, as well.
HOWEVER, sustainable clothing can actually help address many of the issues our world faces today. For starters, organic/sustainable fibers and fabrics reduce the amount of carbon given off- which no doubt is a GOOD thing. Sustainable clothing also lasts longer. Investing in timeless pieces and cutting back on your consumerism will do WONDERS for the earth because you’ll be generating less waste.
You’ll look cute while affecting change!!
..& you’ll be SAVING $$$!
That’s a win in my book.
One thing I LOVE about ethical fashion is the fact that it is fair trade; meaning your clothes are not made using unethical practices (such as child labor, etc.) & creates employment and fair wages for workers in underserved areas and developing nations. These individuals work in safe & healthy working conditions and are provided with the means to improve their skills through education, job training, etc., and also have access to financial assistance if needed.
I just recently started to adapt to a more sustainable way of living. I’ve started to become more mindful of the things I purchase and lean towards sustainable products and greener companies. I’ve also begun filtering out my clothes & skincare/beauty products that I currently own to slowly transition into this new way of life.
By no means am I an expert when it comes to sustainability; I’m still learning as I go. Change starts with you, so I hope you’ll join me.
I’ll be sure to keep you guys updated with my favorite sustainable clothing brands and products. Currently, my two favorite brands include Everlane & J. Crew. Not all J. Crew items are certified fair trade, but this cute jumpsuit is & it’s perfect for the warm weather coming up. I’ve linked more of my favorites here.
