100’s of pop-up restaurants, high-tech companies, start-ups, and 47 square miles of endless hills and the coastline; there’s plenty to do & explore when visiting San Francisco.
Once referred to as the Gold Rush, to the Summer of Love, and now the Silicon Valley; San Francisco is an ever-changing city.
The biggest mistake I made while visiting during 4th of July weekend was not carrying some sort of outwear with me. You’d think visiting San Fran during the summer months would mean you’d be experiencing warm weather, right?! Well, WRONG. Don’t let the Bay Area fool you.
The climate in San Francisco remains mild throughout the year due to the city’s maritime location & large hills; so make sure you come prepared!
Below you can find my 3-day itinerary exploring the Bay Area.
Day 1
WALK ACROSS THE GOLDEN GATE BEACH
A classic. Make sure you bring a jacket as it gets quite windy!
BAKER BEACH
Not meant for swimming, rather it gives you one of the most breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
*I suggest watching the sunset from here if time permits!
DAY 2
EXPLORE FISHERMAN’S WHARF
Crowded & touristy, but there’s so much to do & see in this area of the city; especially the talented street entertainers. Be prepared to spend an entire afternoon here.
Make sure you try the famous sourdough bread from Boudin Bakery while visiting Pier 39.
TAKE A TOUR OF ALCATRAZ
I recommend you buy your tickets far in advance for Alcatraz due to its’ high demand.
MAKE A PIT STOP AT LOMBARD STREET
Known as “zigzag street” or even the most “crookedest street” in the world, it’s a unique photo-op opportunity with a view of the city that will leave you in awe.
DAY 3
EXPLORE UNION SQUARE
Some of the best museums in the city can be found near Union Square; including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
You can also catch the iconic San Francisco Cable Car from Union Square. If I remember correctly, the cable car leaves from Powell Street & typically costs $7 one-way.
THE PAINTED LADIES
Sometimes referred to as “Postcard Row”, the Painted Ladies are one of the most photographed locations in San Francisco.
If I’m being honest, my sister & I felt as if we were in a scene of Full House while visiting the Painted Ladies. (We may or may not have sang the theme song repeatedly a countless number of times, HAH!)
MISSION DOLORES PARK
One of the best ways to spend your afternoon in San Fran. Have a picnic, people-watch, read a book, or whatever it is that your heart desires- it’s simply one of the most peaceful ways to spend an afternoon in the city; especially while on vacation.
ALSO, make sure you stop by Salt & Straw sometime during your visit for the BEST ice cream. The flavors are all so unique & delicious, it WILL NOT disappoint!
This is the BARE minimum you could do while visiting San Francisco. My time there was short & I didn’t have the chance to do/see everything I would have loved to, but here are some more suggestions if you happen to have some more time there:
- Muir Woods
- Coit Tower
- Haight Ashbury District
- Mission District
- Land’s End & Ocean Beach
Ironically, my flight happened to land in San Francisco the morning of the 4th of July BUT because of the time difference I fell asleep & missed the fireworks!!
I still had an AMAZING trip, so I’m not complaining. However, if you happen to be visiting the Bay Area during the 4th of July, please DON’T fall asleep like I did & miss an opportunity to watch fireworks from the Golden Gate Bridge.
I hope this guide serves as a great resource for you during your visit to the Bay Area!
